St Stephen’s Hall Companion Exhibition
Before stepping into the reconstructed splendour of St Stephen’s Hall, visitors are invited to take a moment and explore two distinctive exhibition spaces. The first leads us through the story of the hall’s creation, and its remarkable rebirth 120 years later. The second offers a contemporary interpretation of the Admonitions of St Stephen, presented through a thought-provoking contemporary artistic installation.
The Ceremonial Hall of the Buda Castle Palace First to Be Reborn
The journey begins along the historic corridor, where the story of St Stephen’s Hall slowly unfolds.
Here, we discover why the hall was originally created, who contributed to its design and craftsmanship, and how its resplendent furnishings came to be admired far beyond Hungary’s borders. The exhibition also reveals insights into the total destruction of the hall during the Second World War, and details the extraordinary processes through which it was recreated more than seventy years later. Archival photographs, animations, detailed models and immersive installations add to the interactive experience.
In the room adjacent to the reconstructed hall, a contemporary installation by artist Sámuel Havadtőy awaits visitors. A leading figure of New York’s art scene in the 1980s, Havadtőy reimagines the Admonitions of St Stephen for the present day.
Using the powerful symbolism of the door, his work reflects on the responsibilities, dilemmas and lasting significance of Hungary’s state-founding king. An accompanying animation offers a concise portrait of St Stephen’s role in shaping the nation’s history.
